Wispy Umbrella Orchid (Bulbophyllum gracillimum)

A petite native orchid which is widespread, distributed from Thailand to Australia. The Wispy Umbrella Orchid grows on trees as epiphytes or as lithophytes which clasp firmly onto granite rocks. Flowering in Penang usually occurs in November to December each year, with the delicate spike arising from the base of the pseudobulb and flowers forming at the end of this spike as an umbel. The lateral sepals are the flower’s most distinct part, extending out as long curved tails, giving the flower its wispy appearance.
